IBC Innovation Award 2024: Content Creation

Olympic Broadcasting Services were awarded an IBC Content Creation Innovation Award for leveraging Private 5G to enable live broadcast contributions from more than 200 Samsung S24 Ultra smartphones. Private 5G networks were deployed along the Seine for the Paris 2024 Olympics Opening Ceremony, and on several boats out at sea for the sailing competitions in Marseille. Neutral Wireless were recognised as a key technical partner for this award, along with Haivision, Cyan View, AMP VISUAL TV, Intel, Samsung, Cisco and Orange.

Senior Systems engineer Dr. Samuel Yoffe accepted the Best Paper award at the 2024 National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Show in Las Vegas, on behalf of a team of 15 authors from Neutral Wireless and our partners at StrathSDR, the University of Strathclyde, and the BBC. The award-winning paper described the end-to-end experience of designing a Private 5G network operating in the n77 shared spectrum band (3.8 to 4.2 GHz) using Software-Defined Radio, and the steps taken to customise and optimise that network for media and broadcast.
IABM BaM Award: Best Project / Collaboration
NAB Show — April 2024
Neutral Wireless accepted the BaM award for Best Project / Collaboration at the 2024 NAB Show in Las Vegas. This was in recognition of the planning, design, and deployment of the world’s largest pop-up Private 5G SA network in London for the King’s Coronation in 2023. The solution was a fantastic collaborative engineering effort with our lead project partners BBC R&D, and our technology supporters at Amarisoft, AW2S, Alpha Wireless, Haivision, StrathSDR, University of Strathclyde, AMD, LiveU, and Sony.

Neutral Wireless and partners (StrathSDR, BBC R&D, BBC News, LiveU, Sony, Haivision, Amarisoft, AW2S, Alpha Wireless) won a second IBC Innovation Award for the world’s largest pop-up 5G standalone non-public network for live broadcast contributions using shared spectrum, deployed for the Coronation of HM King Charles III. To quote Chair of Judges, Fergal Ringrose — “To be honest this was an outstanding entry right from the start of judging, due to the breakthrough level of innovation.”

Neutral Wireless worked in collaboration with BT Media & Broadcast, BBC R&D, and Zixi to deliver a cutting-edge “Wireless IP and Low Earth Orbit Satellite TV Production” demonstration on the BT M&B stand. This innovative demo featured a Neutral Wireless 2 GHz bi-directional wireless IP link, bonded OneWeb and Starlink LEO satellite backhaul, an ultra-fast BBC R&D prototype HEVC encoder, Zixi load-balancing, and Sony remote camera control equipment.

Neutral Wireless and BBC R&D won the IBC Innovation Award for “Best Technical Paper” 2023. Our paper — titled “5G Standalone Non-Public Networks: Modernising Wireless Production” — detailed the exceptional work undertaken in deploying the world’s largest single-use 5G Standalone Non-Public Network for the broadcast of King Charles III’s Coronation.

European Broadcasting Union — June 2023
In collaboration with BBC R&D, BBC News, and BBC Technology Group, Neutral Wireless deployed the world’s largest single-use private 5G standalone (SA) network to support the broadcast of His Majesty King Charles III’s Coronation. This work was recognised with a prestigious EBU Technology & Innovation award; beating 23 entries from broadcasters from across Europe.
IBC Accelerator Project of the Year Award
IBC — February 2023
Neutral Wireless won the IBC Accelerator Project of the Year Award 2022 as a champion of the “5G Remote Production… in the Middle of Nowhere” project. Our team partnered with local broadcasters and production crews to deploy 5G private networks and modem solutions in New Zealand, Kenya, Ireland, Denmark, Scotland, and England on a variety of international shared bands for sports events, festivals, and cultural activities.
