Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) and various partners — including Neutral Wireless — have been shortlisted for an IBC Innovation Award ahead of the IBC 2024 conference in Amsterdam for their use of smartphone video feeds captured using Private 5G during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games!

During the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 games, Over 200 Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra smartphones were deployed across the 85 athlete boats used for the ceremony. Live smartphone feeds captured via Haivision’s MoJoPro app supported the broadcast production, with a Private 5G Standalone network deployed along the Seine.

Using Private 5G, 250 Samsung S24 Ultra devices captured live footage from the 85 athlete boats used in the Paris 2024 Olympics opening ceremony.

Similarly, Samsung handsets were used to capture live on-board footage from the sailing events at Marseille Marina — bringing the viewers as close to the action as possible as the athletes battled the elements. In this case, a mobile three-cell Private 5G network was deployed across three catamarans out on the Mediterranean Sea, covering the fields of play and providing connectivity to the Samsung handsets.

A 3-cell Private 5G network was deployed on boats off Marseille Marina, to provide live on-board footage from the Olympic sailing events.

Private 5G networks were also deployed in other venues, such as in Bercy Arena, the Stade de France, and the Paris La Défense Arena. With high-speed wireless uploads enabling fully-remote editing workflows, photographers from agencies such as Getty could move from apparatus to apparatus, focusing entirely on capturing iconic shots of athletes such as Simeone Biles.

Neutral Wireless, Orange and Cisco provided the Private 5G network using Intel-powered solutions. Neutral Wireless has significant experience in providing Private 5G connectivity for live broadcasts, with our ultra-configurable networks easily optimised for the demanding (uplink) throughput and low-latency requirements of broadcast use cases.

Other partners involved in the project include CyanView, who enabled remote camera control, and AMP VISUAL TV who managed the remote production. The project has been shortlisted as a 2024 IBC Innovation Award finalist in the Content Creation category.

The award winners will be announced in a ceremony taking place in the Auditorium Complex at the RAI conference centre on Sunday, 15 September at 18.00 CET.
